Stream Waders
Several Master Watershed Stewards and community volunteers are trained by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources as Stream Waders. The DNR Stream Waders program 10 Year Report provides information on the program from 2000 to 2009. Steady funding for the state-wide program ended. However here in Howard County, Columbia Association Watershed Management provides logistical support and funds for the highly specialized laboratory work required by the Stream Wader Protocol. You can find a draft of the MBSS Sampling Manual 2024 here.
Sets of stream health reports grouped by certain year’s are available. These reports provide assessed location and watershed information as well as general stream buffer and surrounding land use with recommendations for stream health improvement. On the second page scores for stream health based benthic macroinvertebrate types and numbers are provided – The Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (BIBI) measures how healthy a stream is based on which invertebrates are found there and how sensitive they are to pollution. In-stream and buffer and floodplain conditions scores as well as general water quality measurements are also provided.
