SUMMARY:WSA Members In-Person Meeting and Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Attend an in-person meeting and presentation for Watershed Stewards and the WSA Advisory Committee.\nAscend One Building – (Check-In Required) 8930 Stanford Blvd\, Columbia\, MD\n\n6:00 – 6:30: Food and greetings\n6:30 – 7:30: Paul’s Presentation\n\nFood:  Sandwiches\, chips\, and desert will be provided – so please RSVP. \nOur speaker: Paul Kazyak –\nToday\, Paul is now a proud grandfather but out of high school he joined the Navy. His post-navy career has taken him from the Adirondacks to Maryland. He has been an ecology teacher at graduate level and an important part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources until he retired in 2016. Paul has been involved in (as he says) a fair amount of “environmental stuff”. Hopefully\, he will expand on that for us. \nPaul has also authored and contributed to several scientific studies and papers about Maryland Biological Stream Surveys (MBSS)\, the state of the streams and biological stream survey results. \nHis talk will look at biodiversity hotspots in the county\, a quick overview of what fishes we have\, how many types of benthic macroinvertebrates there are and how rare they are\, a bit about herpetofauna\, and how to use the Maryland streams map to find information. He will also dive into what human activities affect biodiversity\, with a focus on impervious surface\, road salt\, legacy effects\, migration barriers\, loss of forest.

SUMMARY:The "Smart Salting" Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Winter Maintenance Contracts that Reduce Costs and Protect Liability\n \nJoin us to learn more about putting performance-based practices into winter maintenance contracts. Traditional ‘per-ton’ or ‘per-application’ salt contracts can inadvertently encourage over-salting\, leading to higher costs\, damaged infrastructure\, and environmental harm. This webinar provides property managers\, HOA and Condo Association board members\, etc. with a clear roadmap for transitioning to performance-based contracting—an approach that prioritizes measurable safety outcomes over the sheer volume of material used. You’ll hear from Jason Swope\, MD DC WV Coordinator of the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional Program and Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council and a leader in the world of environmentally-minded smart salting\, and from Benjamin Rhoades\, Watershed Manager and Acting Environmental Director of the Reston Association\, who has been working to put these lessons into practice in Reston\, VA. \nRegister for Webinar at this link

SUMMARY:Assessing the Effectiveness of Green Stormwater Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Addressing Stormwater Management Goals at the Watershed Scale\nRegister at this link \nProject Description:\nThe primary goal of this research project was to employ a suite of state-of-the-art hydrologic methods to assess the aggregated\, watershed-scale effectiveness of using green stormwater infrastructure as part of new suburban residential development in north-central Howard County\, Maryland. The field-based study was conducted over 5½ years (2019-2025) on a small (0.31 mi 2 ) watershed drained by an unnamed tributary to the Little Patuxent River; runoff and water quality responses were monitored through 1) the “pre-GSI” period\, 2) the period “during GSI” implementation\, and the “post-GSI” period of development. An adjacent watershed (Plumtree Branch\, 0.82 mi 2 )\, developed using traditional stormwater management\, was used as a hydroclimatic control. \nSpeaker -Dr. Keith N. Eshleman:\nProfessor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and is based at Appalachian Laboratory in Frostburg\, Maryland. Dr. Eshleman’s research interests are in the areas of watershed and wetlands hydrology; groundwater/surface water interactions; biogeochemical processes in upland and wetland ecosystems; water quality modeling; and ecosystem responses due to natural disturbances\, energy development\, and land use change. Eshleman’s field-oriented research program has broadly focused on man’s impacts on the hydrologic cycle\, specifically on examination of the hydrological effects of acid deposition\, forest disturbances\, surface mining\, shale gas development\, urban stormwater management\, and peatland drainage and restoration.

SUMMARY:CBLpro Webinar - Natives and Solar Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Designing for Shade\, Runoff\, and Reality: Native Plants Under Solar Carports\nHoward County is piloting native plant landscaping beneath solar carports at the East Columbia Campus to evaluate how native species perform in the unique conditions created by solar infrastructure. The project examines plant survival\, growth\, and maintenance under variable shade\, concentrated runoff at panel drip lines\, and cooler microclimates\, while also assessing benefits such as erosion control\, stormwater management\, and pollinator habitat. \n
