SUMMARY:Water Quality Talk by Dr. Andy Lazur
DESCRIPTION:  \nUniversity of Maryland’s Sea Grant and Watershed Stewards Academy programs are providing free native plants to those who reserve their spot for this continuing education session. \n\nPrivate wells and onsite septic systems serve millions of residents across the Chesapeake Bay watershed\, yet they remain among the least regulated components of our water infrastructure. At the same time\, emerging contaminants—including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS/PFOS) and microplastics—are increasingly being detected in groundwater and surface waters\, raising new concerns for human health and environmental quality. \nThis session\, led by water quality specialist Dr. Andy Lazur\, will provide an overview of how well and septic systems function\, common pathways for contamination\, and the growing body of research surrounding emerging contaminants. Participants will explore how PFAS\, PFOS\, and microplastics enter and move through the environment\, their potential impacts\, and current gaps in monitoring\, regulation\, and public awareness\, and what\, if anything\, can be done on the household level to avoid these contaminants. \nThe session will also highlight practical strategies for Watershed Stewards and Howard County residents to better engage homeowners\, agricultural communities\, and local decision-makers on these topics. Emphasis will be placed on translating complex science into actionable guidance\, improving risk communication\, and identifying opportunities for outreach\, education\, and collaboration. \nBy the end of the session\, participants will be better equipped to: \n\nUnderstand the connections between wells\, septic systems\, and groundwater quality\nDescribe sources and risks associated with PFAS\, PFOS\, and microplastics\nCommunicate effectively with communities about emerging water quality concerns\nIntegrate these topics into existing water quality and community programming\n\nThis session will strengthen participants’ capacity to address evolving water quality challenges and support more informed\, resilient communities.

SUMMARY:Where Clean Water Meets Community
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing Innovation at the Wetlands at Long’s Park\nRegister at this link \nJoin Angela Brackbill for a look beneath the surface of The Wetlands at Long’s Park – the Grand Prize-winning project of the 2025 Best Urban BMP in the Bay (BUBBAs) awards. This webinar will explore how the City of Lancaster transformed Long’s Park’s aging pond and stormwater challenges into an innovative natural treatment system that captures and treats over 16 million gallons of stormwater and recirculated pond water annually\, significantly reducing nutrient and sediment pollution while enhancing habitat and public amenities. Webinar attendees will learn about the innovative design components that made this project stand apart\, from floating wetland islands and an iron-enhanced media filter to constructed marshes and interpretive walkways and hear firsthand how thoughtful public engagement and education were woven into a project that serves both community and watershed health.

SUMMARY:Stormwater Impacts of Solar Installations
DESCRIPTION:Highlight 2 research projects that focus on potential stormwater impacts of large-scale solar installations in Virginia and central Pennsylvania.\nRegister for this Webinar \n  \nDr. Ryan Stewart presents: \nUtility‑scale solar facilities are being constructed throughout Virginia\, yet significant uncertainty remains about the volume and timing of stormwater runoff they produce. It is also unclear whether key design parameters for stormwater detention features are being applied appropriately. With support from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ)\, we launched a six‑year study in 2023 to measure and evaluate stormwater generation from utility‑scale solar installations across the state. This presentation shares preliminary findings from the first 1–2 years of monitoring\, focusing on three representative solar sites in Virginia. \nDr. Lauren McPhillips presents: \nWith “solar farms” there is potential for impacts on natural hydrologic processes\, and a need to understand implications for design of appropriate management practices. We conducted field research on solar farms in central Pennsylvania that represent the complex terrain in our region (e.g.\, high slopes). Soil moisture data indicates redistribution of water relative to panels\, with elevated soil moisture at the dripline\, and drier soil under the panel. Soil moisture data indicate periods of saturation and runoff generation near panel driplines\, but very limited saturation in the interspace between panel rows\, indicating infiltration of runoff. Data from an infiltration basin and trench document the ability to adequately retain and infiltrate runoff. This hydrologic data has been used to calibrate models of solar farm hydrology\, which help understand runoff changes from pre- to post-solar farm-development. This research collectively indicates that well-vegetated open space between panel rows plays a critical role in managing runoff. In some cases\, structural stormwater management is necessary on solar farms\, in order to prevent adverse impacts on runoff. Continued development of best practices will ensure that solar farms are developed with maximum benefit.

SUMMARY:WSA Members In-Person Meeting and Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Attend an in-person meeting and presentation for Watershed Stewards and the WSA Advisory Committee.\nAscend One Building – (Check-In Required) 8930 Stanford Blvd\, Columbia\, MD\n\n6:00 – 6:30: Food and greetings\n6:30 – 7:30: Paul’s Presentation\n\nFood:  Sandwiches\, chips\, and desert will be provided – so please RSVP. \nOur speaker: Paul Kazyak –\nToday\, Paul is now a proud grandfather but out of high school he joined the Navy. His post-navy career has taken him from the Adirondacks to Maryland. He has been an ecology teacher at graduate level and an important part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources until he retired in 2016. Paul has been involved in (as he says) a fair amount of “environmental stuff”. Hopefully\, he will expand on that for us. \nPaul has also authored and contributed to several scientific studies and papers about Maryland Biological Stream Surveys (MBSS)\, the state of the streams and biological stream survey results. \nHis talk will look at biodiversity hotspots in the county\, a quick overview of what fishes we have\, how many types of benthic macroinvertebrates there are and how rare they are\, a bit about herpetofauna\, and how to use the Maryland streams map to find information. He will also dive into what human activities affect biodiversity\, with a focus on impervious surface\, road salt\, legacy effects\, migration barriers\, loss of forest.

SUMMARY:The "Smart Salting" Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Winter Maintenance Contracts that Reduce Costs and Protect Liability\n \nJoin us to learn more about putting performance-based practices into winter maintenance contracts. Traditional ‘per-ton’ or ‘per-application’ salt contracts can inadvertently encourage over-salting\, leading to higher costs\, damaged infrastructure\, and environmental harm. This webinar provides property managers\, HOA and Condo Association board members\, etc. with a clear roadmap for transitioning to performance-based contracting—an approach that prioritizes measurable safety outcomes over the sheer volume of material used. You’ll hear from Jason Swope\, MD DC WV Coordinator of the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional Program and Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council and a leader in the world of environmentally-minded smart salting\, and from Benjamin Rhoades\, Watershed Manager and Acting Environmental Director of the Reston Association\, who has been working to put these lessons into practice in Reston\, VA. \nRegister for Webinar at this link
