Trails at Woodlot Project

Posted on 03/30/2023

The Trails at Woodlot community within the Village of Harpers Choice entered into a mentorship agreement with the Watershed Stewards Academy (WSA) in August of 2022.  The community consists of 90 single family homes and 32 town homes.  This partnership has resulted in increased concern for Watershed issues within the community and a move to action on several fronts.

First, one community member, Robert Hartranft, completed the Watershed Stewards Academy training in the Fall of 2022 and is on schedule to complete his capstone project.  In the late spring of 2023 Robert will begin a storm drain stenciling program to stencil 6 prominently located storm drains within the Trails at Woodlot community as part of his capstone project.  Community members will be encouraged to participate in a survey, the stenciling and there will be a water model demonstration and picnic at this community outreach event.

Following the information in the original Neighborhood Source Assessment (NSA) and the WSA recommendations, the Trails at Woodlot completed a first round of succession tree planting with Howard County EcoWorks in the fall of 2022.  In addition, one community member is planning a rain garden on their property and others have expressed interest in native plants and conservation landscapes.
